Spanning
25 years I've written around 75 songs, maybe more. Back in the early
70's
many were recorded on a reel-to-reel tape player with just me on
mostly
guitar and
some piano and my vocals, but over the years I lost the
reel-to-reel tapes in
one of my many moves, and most of those
songs I can only remember parts of a
few from that
era that were lost. Later I wrote songs singing into a
cassette
player, and
about 30 of those I do have saved. Following are the
songs that I was able to record in full
production or a few practice
tapes and I also added some acapella versions of me
just singing into a
recorder or the computer of the melody. The rest of my lost
songs
have vaporized back into the
aether. I did find a few sheets of written music
of a few songs I
had stored away in a box dating back to 1975. However,
I do not
read or write a note of music, and I paid people to write out the
music
sheets for me on a handful of my songs.

Below is a really rough version, the original practice tape of this song when Paul was teaching it to me and I started changing a bit of the melody with his permission. After I learned the song and rehearsals, we performed this acoustic version at BlaBla Cafe in Los Angeles in 1978 People Rise and Shine Practice Session - circa 1976 c 1975 Paul Sirmons Sharon Shane and Paul Sirmons - 1978 - BlaBla Cafe, L.A., CA |
Because
I always loved the song and loved singing it, 20 years after my friend
Paul Sirmons wrote it...I called Paul in Florida and asked for his
permission to professionally record it. Christian Osborne did
the
production and played all the instruments. Although different
than the original acoustic version, I liked how it came out...but Paul
didn't like it. People Rise and Shine Recorded 1995 (Sharon Shane-vocals/ Christian Osborne-production) c 1975 Paul Sirmons Yoko Ono, John Lennon, Christian Osborne on stage in NYC when Christian was 17 or 18. |

A few songs
I remember I recently sang into mp3 files on my computer since I no
longer play the guitar or even remember how I played these songs in the
70's and 80's. The Course Unproduced a cappella - 2011 c 1974 Sharon Karp-Shane In Silence Unproduced a cappella - 2011 c 1974 Sharon Karp-Shane Bring Me Love Recorded mid 1980s - practice tape (Sharon Shane - vocals/piano) c 1976 - D. Chell The Sound of Thunder Unproduced a capella - 2011 c 1978 Sharon Karp-Shane This song I wrote for a cartoon about the slaughter of seal pups. A friend of mine connected me with the producer but production was halted on the cartoon because the producer's wife had gotten cancer. At the time there was talk about trying to get Burl Ives to sing this, since I wrote it in the "folk music " genre. I performed it just me singing with my guitar at a party in the Hollywood Hills of the producer. Unproduced a capella - 2011 c 1978 Sharon Karp-Shane |
Mesmerized Unproduced a cappella - 2011 c 1975 Sharon Karp-Shane |
Reach Out Recorded 1984 (Sharon Shane - Acoustic Guitar/Vocals, Lance Tan- Electric Guitar, other players unknown) c 1978 Sharon Karp-Shane I recently found the reel to reel master tape of this recording in my closet and had it transferred to digital. Working at CBS Records I knew the guy that ran the recording studio for the publishing division. Ron was nice enough to give me a free recording session after company hours to record this song. But it was such a rushed project due to lack of time and musicians just showed up that evening to learn their part with no rehearsals. I don't remember all the guys that played but I think my friend Lance brought some friends of his. I haven't heard this since it was recorded 1984 and I didn't let anyone hear it back then because I thought it was pretty bad. It's not mixed properly and sounds like a recorded rehearsal. But it's the only recorded version I have of this song. 1984 - Reel to Reel box cover from the defunct recording studio of CBS Songs. |
Too Soon to Tell Recorded 1980 - practice tape (Sharon Shane - vocals + guitar -out of tune! I only had part of this song on a practice tape) c 1979 - Sharon Karp-Shane I Want to See You Again Unproduced practice tape a cappella c 1986 Sharon Shane You Got a Hold on Me Recorded 1987 (Sharon Shane-vocals Steffen Presley-production) c 1987 Sharon Shane OK...I'm baring all now. I never let anyone hear this recording....until now. The perfectionist in me retired a while ago, so I'm able to put this out in the world now. I wasn't sure if I didn't like the production or if I didn't like the song back in 1987. On most of the recordings I did with Steffen producing, I had input on some of the arrangement. But on this one I didn't have any input on the instrumentation and just showed up to add my vocals. I think Steffen got carried away with the "quasar and pulsar" space sounds....boing, twang! Without the outer space effects the rest of it reminds me of something from the early 60's...like I don't know. Leslie Gore or maybe Neil Sedaka pops into my mind. But I wrote the song, so I take responsibility for it. Listening to it currently it sounds rather catchy and I don't dislike it as much as I once did. I must be getting really old! |

Other Music Projects |
Besides being a very good friend of almost 30 years now, Buddy Mix, has been one of my favorite singers and songwriters. He is prolific at the scope of styles he's able to compose. I first met Buddy when he worked at CBS Records for a short time back in the early 1980's. And over the years following we worked on many music projects together, one of which I sang backup vocals on 5 of the songs below from his CD a little Meditation, the musical. The CD was followed by the live musical play in Los Angeles. I started out as production assistant and was involved in auditioning the cast. I then helped in coaching the cast members with the vocals at which time the director heard me sing and asked me to be in the chorus. I was reluctant to commit to the schedule of performances but gave in to his pleas. He even gave me a line of dialogue but I begged him to give it to one of the other actors, as I didn't feel comfortable acting. So, I performed in the chorus singing and dancing 4 shows a weekend while my 12-year old son was the prop master and worked the smoke machine, all while he was in school and I was still working at Sony Music. When we weren't on stage as the chorus members we were singing backup vocals backstage into mikes. I also helped with sewing some of the costumes. The full CD or any of the songs are available at Amazon.com. Steffen Presley is an amazing musician and producer and he did all the production work on the following, as well as many of my recordings. Steffen always invited our input into the sounds and production aspects, but he always added so much of his own creativity to the mix.
